Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
