Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
