Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
