Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
