Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
