Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
