Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
