Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps evolved from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French moved down south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
