Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
