Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
