Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
