Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
