Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French headed south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
