Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he established the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
