Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
